The word jeans here doesn’t necessarily mean classic denim jeans as NYDJ also make trousers, or jean styles in other fabrics, plus a jumpsuit.

Fabrics include “regular” denim, cashmere denim, lurex denim, velveteen, corduroy and heathered twill.

Colours include classic indigo denim, light/dark blue denim, black denim, overdyed denim, pinstripe black/blue denim, and black, grey and black multi-stripe in other fabrics.

To wear on top, the company make a body shaper, v-necked tank top style, in black nude and white. This can be worn under T-shirts, blouses and tops to create a flattering look above as well as below the waist.

The styles come with “regular pockets” or inverted welt pockets and can be bought as “regular” styles or with extra “embellishments” – rhinestones and embroidered pocket designs..

The range essentially features jeans, trousers and jumpsuits which will suit all occasions – there’s something for you to wear to the office, chilling out at the weekend, or as party wear. All the styles feature the cut and cross-stitched panel which gives the shaping and comfort qualities.

Comparison to other styles

NYDJ skinny style

Skinny jeans: these were so on trend in recent times it was difficult to spot music and fashion types wearing anything else. Great if you have a “skinny figure” to match the skinny jeans, but for anyone who has a more curvaceous look definitely not recommended. The tendency will be for chunkier thighs yet bizarrely thin looking calves and ankles, especially teamed up with high heels. The infamous “muffin-top” / “whale tail” tummy can also peep out of the waistband, as they tend to have lower waistbands with skin tight styling. NYDJ did introduce a tummy tuck jeans skinny leg version recently, so check them out.

Tapered jeans

Tapered jeans: the bane of TV stylists Trinny and Susanna who have committed to print their belief that these should, in fact, be made illegal. Potentially unflattering for the tummy and bottom due to creating a triangular effect in front and back profile, which draws the eye in and  enhances the size of the middle. In other words, yes your bum does look big in tapered jeans.

Conventional bootleg / straight leg jeans: again, the potential for larger looking thighs is there, along with muffin tops/whale tails if the wearer has a curvier figure.

The answer here to ensure you get a pair of truly sexy jeans is comparing the tummy tuck ones with your regular pairs. Go shopping in your normal jeans with a good friend (who will be honest with you!) in tow and see which ones work better for you shape.

Working in formal dress ?

For women whose professional attire would never include jeans, it’s still possible to get the benefits of the brand in terms of the contouring of the tummy and butt. We suggest you check out their ‘Trouser Slacks’. They come in black, black ‘multi-stripe (think pinstripe) and heather grey. Team them up with a pair of buff heels rather than patent or they could look out of place – I tend to associate patent heels with evening wear rather than the office. Next, match them up with a suit jacket, making sure you continue the stripes if you’re going for the pin stripe pair – it could look mis-matched with a plain jacket. Finally, wear the NYDJ body shaper on top underneath your blouse or shirt – not a problem as it comes in black, nude or white (although be aware all black is probably dreary rather than “slimming”, a classic mistake). OK, so many women will be comfortable in jeans but there are those of us who just don’t wear them, no matter what promises are made about our the control wear value There are three options we think could work here. The jumpsuit might be to your taste, which comes in black. You would need to accessorise well, true you do have mores cope for colourful shoes, bags, jewellery and scarves than for when you’re trying to be taken seriously at work! But accessorise, colour image consultants have been saying this for years – or you could again unfortunately create a look that says “Hello, I’m the bigger lady in black trying to hide everything” rather than “I’m the stylish diva you so want to talk to”.  You might also want to try the aforementioned trousers with the body shaper under a colourful top. Or go for the wide leg trousers in the brown overdye – this is not a straightforward denim jean look at all and can tone in well with a wide palette of colours. If you’ve experimented with a smart causal look, you may want to try your hand at the shape wear look for formal occasions.

For weddings, special parties and other formal events you obviously want to look your best, and fit into the tone of the occasion – and for most times, this will never mean denim, unless you fancy some downright odd looks. You can go back to the trouser slacks and begin creating an upper layer that livens them up without being too garish. Pop the body shaper underneath a silk blouse, add a necklace with semi-precious stones (not plastic) and then co-ordinate it with a matching bag. Unless in the height of summer heat, replace a jacket with a smart, good quality pashmina that co-ordinates with your bag and necklace. This time, patent shoes can look great but you might want to consider a neutral tone to avoid looking over-accessories – it can look fussy if you have a matching necklace, bag, pashmina and shoes around more neutral clothing. Splashes of colour in complementary tones of the same colour or well matched different colours against more neutral clothing draws the eye. Uniform accessorising looks well, like a uniform, and kills the style value of adding color. For colours, think about picking up the accents of different colours, rather than having every accessory the same:

There may be times when you don’t feel you can make it all work, for example a summer wedding might not lend itself to the trouser slacks in black or grey. But equally, you can probably extend the wearability factor beyond jeans to wear outside work, and definitely if you hate the jeans look, you can still find something that you’ll feel comfortable and confident in.

So now you have some ideas for wearing the brand to work, in your leisure time when you don’t want jeans and working it into outfits for special occasions so you can still get the shaping an d lifting effects. Hopefully this will allow you to think outside the box a little and move away from the idea the range is only good for people who live in jeans.
